Distress Stains are fluid, water-based dyes used in paper crafting and mixed media to add quick, easy, and water-reactive color to porous surfaces. They were originally available in bottles with a fabric dabber top, but have largely been replaced by the more popular and versatile Distress Spray Stains.
Product Description and Use
Formula: Distress Stains are a fluid version of the Tim Holtz Distress Dye Inks, meaning they are transparent and the color is absorbed into the paper or surface.
Application: The original product was a 1 oz bottle with a built-in spring-valve fabric dabber for direct application. They allowed for easy coverage of large areas and the creation of mottled, distressed effects when misted with water.
Surfaces: They can be used on various porous materials like paper, cardstock, wood, and fabric.
Water Reaction: A key feature of all Distress products is their reactivity with water, which allows the color to spread, blend, and create unique aged or “wicking” effects.
